Focus Areas and Global Insights

Forestry

There are approximately 9.87 billion acres of forestland throughout the world. Each year, approximately 3.7 billion tons of wood are harvested for the production of various products such as lumber, packaging, tissue and biofuels. Forests provide many other important benefits such as water quality, biodiversity, carbon offsets and other climate solutions.

Oil & Gas

Current estimated global oil & gas reserves are approximately 1.5 trillion barrels of oil and 6,800 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Global annual consumption rates are approximately 36.5 billion barrels of oil per year and 132 trillion cubic feet of natural gas per year. New processes and technologies have enabled producers to extract oil & gas from reservoirs that were previously considered uneconomical.

Metals & Mining

Each year, approximately 3,500 tons of gold and 27,000 tons of silver are produced from mines around the world. A significant portion of these precious metals are used for jewelry and bullion. Approximately 20 million tons of copper and approximately 60 million tons of aluminum are produced each year for industrial and commercial applications. Higher projected battery production rates will likely increase the demand for other metals such as lithium, cobalt and graphite around the world.

Water

Approximately 70% of the earth’s surface is covered by water. However, only 2.5% of the global water resource is fresh water. An even smaller portion of this fresh water is accessible for consumption. Climate patterns, geologic features and vegetative cover are key factors influencing the distribution and accessibility of fresh water around the world.

Renewable Energy

Approximately 28% of global electricity is currently produced from renewable energy resources, particularly hydropower, wind and solar resources. Electricity production from solar and wind resources is expected to grow significantly over the next 30 years. By 2050, approximately 50% of the world’s electricity is projected to be produced from renewable energy resources.
